Bolivia's payment infrastructure is developing rapidly. Bank transfer is the preferred method for high-value transactions; QR and mobile payments are common for everyday amounts.
Bank Transfer (Transferencia Bancaria)
Bank transfer between Bolivian banks is the recommended method for private car sales. Verify the funds appear in your account before signing the transfer documents or handing over keys. Do not rely on the buyer's confirmation screenshot — check your actual account.
QR Payment (SIGEF / Billetera Móvil)
QR-based payments via bank mobile apps and services like Billetera Móvil are increasingly common in Bolivia. Instant and convenient for smaller amounts. Confirm transaction limits before relying on them for high-value payments.
Cash (Efectivo)
Cash is widely used in Bolivia for private car transactions. For vehicles above BOB 50,000, bank transfer reduces fraud risk and provides a clear record for the notary transfer. If accepting cash, count it carefully in a secure location.
Deposit
A holding deposit (arras) once a price is agreed is standard practice. It commits the buyer and takes the car off the market. Clarify refund conditions upfront.
Scams to Avoid
- Fake transfer confirmations: Always check your actual bank account — not screenshots the buyer provides.
- Cheque fraud: Accepting personal cheques carries significant risk in Bolivia. Bank transfers are far safer.
- Partial payment pressure: Buyer pays a deposit and pressures you to hand over keys before full payment clears — never proceed until the full amount is received.
