How to Sell a Car Quickly in Canada: Tips That Actually Work

You've decided it's time to sell. But months of Kijiji listings going nowhere while you field lowball messages isn't the plan. Whether you're moving across the country, upgrading to something new, or just clearing the driveway, here's how to sell your car fast without giving it away.

Price It Right: The Foundation of a Fast Sale

A correctly priced car gets enquiries within hours. An overpriced car gets ignored for weeks and eventually sells for less than it would have at the right price from day one.

  • Search Kijiji and AutoTrader.ca: Find the same make, model, year, and trim as yours in similar condition and mileage in your province. What you see is what buyers compare you against.
  • Check the Canadian Black Book: The Canadian Black Book is the standard trade valuation tool. Use it to understand the realistic range for your vehicle.
  • Account for your province's market: Prices for trucks and AWD vehicles skew higher in Prairie provinces and Ontario. Sports cars and convertibles are harder to sell in winter in cold-weather provinces.
  • Build in a negotiation buffer: Price 5–10% above your floor. Most buyers will negotiate, and you want room to come down gracefully.

Sort Your Paperwork Before You List

  • Safety Standards Certificate (Ontario and others): In Ontario, the buyer needs a valid SSC to register the vehicle. Getting it done before listing removes the most common buyer objection and can justify a higher price.
  • Carfax Canada report: Run one before listing. A clean report is one of the most effective trust-building tools for any car over $5,000.
  • Vehicle permit in your name and signed: Have it ready to hand over at the point of sale.
  • Registration current: An expired registration is an immediate red flag.

Photos Make the Difference

  • Wash and detail first: A clean car photographs dramatically better. Clean wheels and tyre shine matter in photos.
  • Shoot in good light: Overcast mornings are ideal — no harsh shadows. Avoid shooting in direct sunlight or at night.
  • Cover all angles: Front, rear, both sides, front 3/4, interior from both front doors, rear seats, trunk, dashboard, odometer, and any noteworthy features or disclosed flaws.
  • Show imperfections honestly: A photographed and disclosed scratch avoids a long drive for the buyer followed by a renegotiation.

Write a Listing That Leaves No Questions

  • Lead with your strongest selling point: low kilometres, full service history, accident-free Carfax.
  • State the exact trim and package — Kijiji buyers search by these.
  • List all notable features: heated seats, remote start, AWD, trailer hitch, backup camera.
  • State whether a Safety Certificate is included (Ontario) or whether a Carfax Canada report is available.
  • Be upfront about any known issues.

Respond Fast and Be Available to View

Buyers in Canada move quickly. A strong enquiry that goes unanswered for 24 hours often leads to a lost sale — the buyer found something else. Turn on notifications, respond within a few hours, and be flexible about evenings and weekends for viewings.
