Vehicle History for Private Sellers in Switzerland: What Buyers Will Check

VenteLégalDocuments

Swiss buyers are thorough and diligent. They have access to cantonal vehicle records, paid history reports, and independent inspection services. Proactive disclosure is the most effective way to build trust.

What Buyers Check

  • Cantonal road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt) records: Registration history, MFK inspection dates, and ownership history are accessible through the cantonal system.
  • Car history reports (Carfax, TÜV Switzerland, DEKRA): Paid reports aggregate European accident data, insurance claims, and odometer records. Popular for imported and higher-value vehicles.
  • Loan and leasing status: Swiss buyers check whether any hire purchase or lease agreement is registered against the vehicle. Outstanding finance is a deal-breaker.
  • MFK (Motorfahrzeugkontrolle) records: Inspection dates and results are on record. Buyers check the MFK history for consistency.

Disclosing Accident History

Switzerland does not have a centralised accident database, but experienced inspectors and DEKRA/TÜV pre-purchase inspection services identify repairs effectively. Disclose all accident and major repair history proactively.

Settle Finance Before Listing

If the vehicle is under a leasing or secured loan agreement, confirm it is fully settled and the lien released before listing. Swiss buyers are diligent about this and will verify.

Consider a Pre-Listing MFK

Having your vehicle pass a current MFK inspection before listing is a strong signal of good condition. For higher-value vehicles, a TÜV Switzerland or DEKRA inspection report adds further credibility.
