Switzerland has highly reliable banking infrastructure that makes private car payment secure and straightforward. Choose the right method based on the sale amount.
Bank Transfer (Überweisung / Virement)
Bank transfer between Swiss banks (UBS, Credit Suisse, Raiffeisen, PostFinance, Cantonal Banks) is the standard and recommended method for car sales in Switzerland. Transfers settle same-day for domestic transactions. Verify funds in your account before completing the cantonal deregistration or handing over keys.
TWINT
TWINT is Switzerland's mobile payment system — instant and widely supported. TWINT has transaction limits (typically CHF 5,000–10,000 per transaction depending on the bank). Suitable for deposits; confirm limits apply for high-value vehicles.
PostFinance
PostFinance (Swiss Post's banking arm) is widely used, particularly in rural cantons. Transfers to and from PostFinance accounts are reliable and same-day within Switzerland.
Deposit
A deposit (Anzahlung, typically CHF 500–2,000) once a price is agreed is standard practice. Clarify refund conditions upfront.
Scams to Avoid
- Fake transfer confirmations: Always verify funds in your actual e-banking — not on screenshots the buyer sends.
- TWINT scams: Scammers ask you to click a TWINT link to 'receive' payment — TWINT payments are initiated by the sender, not via links. Never click external TWINT links.
- Overseas buyer: No legitimate Swiss buyer asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — always a scam.
