Selling a car in China requires a formal ownership transfer at the local Vehicle Administration Office (车辆管理所, VMO). Having all documents in order before meeting the buyer avoids delays.
Essential Documents
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (行驶证, Xíngshǐ zhèng): The primary vehicle document. Must be presented at the VMO for transfer.
- Vehicle Ownership Certificate (车辆所有权证明): Proof of ownership. Required for transfer.
- Seller's ID card (居民身份证): Both buyer and seller must present valid Chinese ID cards at the VMO.
- Transfer application forms: Available at the VMO. Both parties must sign in person.
- Vehicle inspection certificate: Confirms the vehicle has passed the mandatory periodic safety inspection.
- Compulsory insurance (交强险): Must be valid. Can be transferred to the buyer or cancelled and refunded.
Finance Settlement
If the vehicle is under a loan, the lender's lien must be released before the transfer can occur. Obtain a release letter (解押证明) from the lender and complete the lien removal at the VMO before listing or agreeing a sale.
Cross-City Transfers
Transfers between different cities (especially between different provinces) require the vehicle to pass the destination city's emissions and safety standards. The buyer may need to re-register the vehicle in their city.
VMO Process
Both buyer and seller attend the VMO together. The transfer is processed on the day. Bring originals of all documents — copies are not accepted for the transfer registration.
