Payment Methods for Private Car Sales in China: How to Get Paid Safely

China has excellent digital payment infrastructure. Choosing the right payment method protects both parties and creates a clear record for the VMO transfer process.

Bank Transfer (银行转账)

Bank-to-bank transfer is the safest and most auditable method for car sales in China. Funds are traceable and difficult to reverse fraudulently. Use ICBC, CCB, BOC, or other major banks' online transfer services. Verify the funds appear in your account before completing the VMO transfer.

Alipay and WeChat Pay

Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely accepted and instant. Suitable for deposits and lower-value transactions. For high-value transfers, daily limits may apply — verify the limit with your buyer before relying on these methods.

Escrow via Platform

Platforms like Guazi offer escrow-style payment services where funds are held until both parties confirm the transaction is complete. This provides additional protection for high-value private sales.

Cash

Cash is used for lower-value transactions but carries risk for high-value sales. For vehicles above CNY 100,000, bank transfer is strongly preferred and creates a record for tax and legal purposes.

Scams to Avoid

  • Fake transfer screenshots: Always verify funds in your actual bank account or Alipay/WeChat app — not on screenshots sent by the buyer.
  • Instalment scams: Buyer proposes payment in instalments without a formal agreement. Insist on full payment before the VMO transfer.
  • Third-party payment: Be cautious if the buyer wants to pay via a third party's account — it complicates dispute resolution and may indicate fraud.
