Selling a car in Denmark requires transferring ownership through the national vehicle register (Motorregistret). The process is digital and straightforward with the right documents.
Essential Documents and Information
- Registration certificate (Registreringsattest): Both parts of the registration certificate. Deregistered from your name via Motorregistret.
- Danish personal ID (CPR number): Both buyer and seller need their CPR numbers for the digital transfer on Motorregistret.
- MitID or NemID login: Required to access Motorregistret for the online transfer.
- Signed sale agreement (Salgsaftale): Recommended — records the agreed price, vehicle details, and both parties' information.
- Valid periodic inspection (Syn): Danish buyers check that the syn (roadworthiness test) is current. A recently passed syn is a strong trust signal.
Motorregistret Transfer
The ownership transfer is completed via Motorregistret (motorregister.dk) using MitID. Both buyer and seller confirm the transfer digitally. This should be done before or simultaneously with payment and handover. The process takes minutes.
Cancel Insurance
Contact your insurer to cancel the liability insurance (ansvarsforsikring) after the Motorregistret transfer is confirmed. Request a pro-rata refund.
Finance Settlement
If the vehicle is under a car loan, settle the outstanding amount and obtain confirmation from the lender that the vehicle is free of encumbrances. Buyers check this — outstanding finance blocks the transfer.
