Denmark is a highly cashless society. MobilePay and bank transfer are the standard payment methods for private car sales.
Bank Transfer (Bankoverførsel)
Bank transfer is the recommended method for high-value car sales in Denmark. Transfers between major Danish banks (Danske Bank, Nordea, Jyske Bank, Sydbank) settle same-day. Verify funds in your account before completing the Motorregistret transfer or handing over keys.
MobilePay
MobilePay is Denmark's most popular mobile payment app — instant and nearly universally used. MobilePay has transaction limits (typically DKK 5,000–15,000 per transfer) that may restrict its use as the sole payment method for high-value vehicles. Suitable for deposits; check limits for full payment.
Cash
Cash is uncommon for car transactions in Denmark. Bank transfer is strongly preferred and provides a clear audit trail. If cash is requested, count it carefully.
Deposit
A deposit (depositum) via MobilePay or bank transfer once a price is agreed is common practice. Clarify refund conditions upfront.
Scams to Avoid
- Fake MobilePay confirmations: Always verify in your actual MobilePay app — not on screenshots.
- NemID/MitID scams: Scammers ask you to authenticate with MitID as part of a fake payment — never authenticate for a transaction initiated by someone else.
- Overseas buyer: No legitimate Danish buyer asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — always a scam.
