Selling a car in Egypt requires visiting the Traffic Department (مرور) to complete the ownership transfer. Having your documents in order before finding a buyer makes the process faster and smoother.
Required Documents
- Vehicle Registration Card (استمارة تسجيل المركبة): The primary ownership document. Must be valid and in the seller's name.
- National ID (بطاقة الرقم القومي): Both seller and buyer must present valid national IDs. Foreigners must present their passport and residence permit.
- Customs declaration (for imported vehicles): If the car was imported, the customs clearance document may be required.
- Finance clearance letter: If the vehicle has outstanding finance, a clearance letter from the bank or finance company must be obtained before transfer.
Clearing Finance First
If the vehicle is under a bank loan, the bank may hold certain documents. Clear the outstanding balance and obtain a written release letter before advertising the car for sale.
The Traffic Department Transfer Process
- Both seller and buyer visit the local Traffic Department (مرور) together.
- Submit the registration card, national IDs, and any finance clearance documents.
- The car undergoes a quick physical inspection at the Traffic Department.
- Transfer fees are paid and a new registration card is issued in the buyer's name.
Tips
Arrive early — Traffic Departments in Egypt can be busy. Check that your registration is not expired (annual renewal required); an expired registration will delay the transfer until renewed.
