Payment Methods for Private Car Sales in Finland: How to Get Paid Safely

Finland is a highly digital society with excellent banking infrastructure. Bank transfer is the standard method for private car sales.

Bank Transfer (Tilisiirto)

Bank transfer between Finnish banks (OP, Nordea, Danske Bank Finland, S-Pankki) is the recommended method for private car sales. Transfers settle same-day. Verify funds in your account before completing the Traficom ownership notification or handing over keys.

Pivo and Siirto

Pivo (OP bank) and Siirto are Finnish mobile payment services. Instant for smaller amounts, but transaction limits may apply for high-value transactions. Suitable for deposits; confirm limits before relying on them for full payment.

Cash

Cash is uncommon for car transactions in Finland. Bank transfer is strongly preferred and provides a clear audit trail.

Deposit

A deposit (käsiraha, typically €200–1,000) once a price is agreed is common practice in Finland. Clarify whether it is non-refundable (sitova käsiraha) or refundable upfront.

Scams to Avoid

  • Fake transfer confirmations: Always verify in your actual banking app — not on screenshots.
  • Fake Pivo/Siirto links: Scammers send fake payment links. Genuine payment requests do not require you to click a link to receive money.
  • Overseas buyer: No legitimate Finnish buyer asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — always a scam.
