What to Do After Selling Your Car in Finland: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps within the 7-day notification window to avoid ongoing liability.

1. Notify Traficom Within 7 Days

Notify Traficom of the ownership change within 7 days via the traficom.fi online service. Until notification is filed, you may retain liability for fines and tax obligations. The process takes minutes with Suomi.fi authentication.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel the motor liability insurance (liikennevakuutus) after the Traficom notification is confirmed. Request a pro-rata refund for unused premium.

3. Hand Over Part II of the Registration Certificate

Hand over the rekisteriote Part II to the buyer — they need it for their own registration. Retain Part I in the vehicle until the buyer registers.

4. Cancel Any Toll or Road User Accounts

If the vehicle had any connected road user accounts, contact the relevant provider to close or transfer them.

5. Keep All Records

Retain the kauppakirja (sale agreement) and Traficom notification confirmation for at least two years.
