What to Do After Selling Your Car in Hong Kong: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, act promptly to protect yourself from ongoing liability. The 72-hour notification window with the Transport Department is a hard deadline.

1. Notify the Transport Department Within 72 Hours

Both buyer and seller must notify the Transport Department within 72 hours of the sale. Do this via the TD online portal (gov.hk) or at a licensing office in person. Until notification is filed, any traffic offences or fines associated with the vehicle may remain your responsibility.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel your policy and request a refund for the unused portion of your premium. Do not cancel before the sale completes — you need coverage until the transaction is finalised.

3. Cancel Road Tax (If Applicable)

If your vehicle's annual road tax (licence fee) has been paid beyond the sale date, you can apply for a refund of the unexpired portion from the Transport Department.

4. Remove the Vehicle Registration Document

Hand over the original VRD to the buyer — it is required for them to register the vehicle in their name. Retain a copy for your own records.

5. Keep All Records for at Least Two Years

Retain the sale agreement, TD notification confirmation, and any correspondence with the buyer. This protects you in the event of any dispute about ownership, condition, or post-sale claims.
