Documents Needed to Sell a Car in Kuwait: Complete Checklist

Selling a car privately in Kuwait requires a few key documents and a visit to the Ministry of Interior (MOI) traffic department to complete the ownership transfer. Here is exactly what you need to prepare.

Essential Documents

  • Istimara (Vehicle Registration Card): The primary ownership document. Must be in the seller's name and not expired.
  • Civil ID: Both seller and buyer must present valid Kuwaiti Civil IDs at the MOI traffic department.
  • Passport (for expats): Non-Kuwaiti sellers may need their passport in addition to the Civil ID.
  • Bank NOC: If the vehicle is financed, obtain a No Objection Certificate from the lender confirming the loan is cleared before proceeding.
  • Valid insurance certificate: The car must have valid insurance at the point of transfer.

Clearing Finance First

If the vehicle is under a bank loan or from a car dealership on credit, clear the outstanding balance and obtain the bank NOC before advertising the sale. The buyer cannot legally take ownership while any finance is registered against the vehicle.

The MOI Transfer Process

  • Both seller and buyer visit an MOI traffic department together.
  • Submit the Istimara, Civil IDs, bank NOC (if applicable), and insurance certificate.
  • Pay the transfer fee (buyer typically bears this cost).
  • A new Istimara is issued in the buyer's name — this confirms the transfer is complete.

Service History and Inspection

While not legally required, presenting a full service history and offering an independent mechanical inspection significantly increases buyer confidence and supports a higher asking price.
