Payment Methods for Private Car Sales in Kuwait: How to Get Paid Safely

Choosing the right payment method protects you from fraud and ensures the transfer goes smoothly. Here are the standard options for private car sales in Kuwait.

Bank Transfer – Safest Method

Wait for the funds to appear as cleared in your bank account before handing over the car. Bank-to-bank transfers within Kuwait typically clear the same day. Use your IBAN for incoming transfers.

KNET (Kuwaiti Debit Network)

KNET is Kuwait's national payment network linked to debit cards. For smaller amounts or deposits, some sellers use KNET readers or shared merchant terminals. However, bank transfer remains more straightforward for large car sale amounts.

Certified / Manager's Cheque

A certified cheque issued by a Kuwaiti bank is backed by the bank's funds and cannot bounce. Call the issuing bank to verify the cheque before handing over the vehicle and documents.

Cash – Approach with Care

Cash is used in Kuwait for transactions of all sizes, but for car sales above KWD 2,000 the risks of carrying and counting large amounts outweigh the convenience. Bank transfer or certified cheque is more secure.

Scams to Watch Out For

  • Fake transfer screenshots: Always verify funds in your own banking app — never based on what the buyer shows you.
  • Overpayment scam: Buyer sends too much and asks for a refund. The original payment is fraudulent.
  • Fake escrow services: Use only established Kuwaiti banks. Don't use unfamiliar websites or apps at a buyer's insistence.
