Payment Methods for Private Car Sales in Norway: How to Get Paid Safely

Norway is a highly cashless society. Vipps and bank transfer are the standard payment methods for private car sales.

Bank Transfer (Bankoverføring)

Bank transfer is the recommended method for high-value car sales in Norway. Interbank transfers settle same-day via Nets. Verify funds in your account before completing the Statens vegvesen transfer or handing over keys.

Vipps

Vipps is Norway's most popular mobile payment app — nearly universally used. Vipps has transaction limits (typically NOK 5,000–30,000 per transfer depending on the bank) that may restrict its use for high-value transactions. Suitable for deposits; confirm limits before relying on it for full payment.

Cash

Cash is uncommon in Norway and rarely used for car transactions. Bank transfer and Vipps are strongly preferred. If cash is requested, count it carefully.

Deposit

A deposit via Vipps or bank transfer once a price is agreed is common practice. Clarify refund conditions upfront.

Scams to Avoid

  • Fake Vipps confirmations: Always verify in your actual Vipps app — not on screenshots the buyer sends.
  • BankID scams: Scammers ask you to authenticate with BankID for a fake payment process — never authenticate BankID for transactions initiated by someone else.
  • Overseas buyer: No legitimate Norwegian buyer asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — always a scam.
