Documents Needed to Sell a Car in Sweden: Complete Checklist

Selling a car in Sweden requires notifying Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency) of the ownership change. The process is largely digital and well-organised.

Essential Documents and Information

  • Registration certificate (Registreringsbevis): Both parts (A and B) of the registration certificate. Part B (the yellow part) goes to the buyer; part A may be required for the Transportstyrelsen notification.
  • Seller's personal ID number (personnummer): Required for the online ownership transfer notification.
  • Signed sale agreement (Köpekontrakt): Strongly recommended — records the agreed price, vehicle details, and both parties' contact information.
  • Valid roadworthiness test (Besiktning): Swedish cars require a valid annual roadworthiness test (kontrollbesiktning). A recently passed test is a strong selling point.

Transportstyrelsen Notification

Both buyer and seller must notify Transportstyrelsen of the ownership change via the online portal (transportstyrelsen.se). Until this is completed, the seller retains legal liability. The notification takes minutes and can be done immediately after payment is received.

Cancel Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel the policy after the Transportstyrelsen notification is confirmed. Request a refund for unused premium.

Finance Settlement

If the vehicle is under a car loan (billån), settle the outstanding amount and obtain a release confirmation before selling. Buyers will check — an unreleased loan is a deal-breaker.
