Sweden is one of Europe's most cashless societies. Bank transfer and Swish are the standard payment methods for private car sales.
Swish
Swish is Sweden's most popular mobile payment system — instant and widely used. Swish has a default transaction limit of SEK 150,000 per transaction (higher limits are possible with bank approval). Suitable for most private car sales; confirm the limit applies for your vehicle's value before relying on it.
Bank Transfer (Bankgiro / Internetbank)
Standard bank transfers via Swedish internet banking (Handelsbanken, Swedbank, SEB, Nordea, Danske Bank) settle same-day via Bankgirot. Suitable for any transaction value. Verify the funds appear in your account before completing the Transportstyrelsen transfer or handing over keys.
Cash
Cash is rare in Sweden and somewhat unusual for car transactions. Swedish buyers typically prefer digital payments. If requested, count cash carefully — using a bank note verification device for large amounts is advisable.
Deposit
A deposit (handpenning, typically SEK 2,000–10,000) once a price is agreed is standard practice. It commits the buyer while full payment is arranged. Clarify refund terms upfront.
Scams to Avoid
- Fake Swish confirmations: Always verify in your actual Swish app — not on screenshots.
- BankID scam: Scammers ask you to authenticate with BankID as part of a fake 'payment process' — never authenticate BankID for a transaction initiated by someone else.
- Overseas buyer: No legitimate Swedish buyer asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — always a scam.
