Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps promptly to protect yourself from ongoing liability and close the sale cleanly.
1. Notify Transportstyrelsen Immediately
Notify Transportstyrelsen of the ownership change immediately after the sale via the online portal (transportstyrelsen.se). Until you do, any speed camera fines, congestion charges, and other traffic violations associated with the registration remain your liability. This takes minutes online.
2. Cancel Your Insurance
Contact your insurer to cancel the motor insurance policy after the Transportstyrelsen notification is confirmed. Request a refund for unused premium. Swedish insurance is typically cancellable with short notice.
3. Return Registration Certificate Part B
Hand over Part B of the registration certificate (the yellow part) to the buyer. They need it for their own registration. Retain a copy of the full sale agreement.
4. Confirm Tax and Charges Are Settled
Vehicle registration tax and congestion charges (trängselskatt) follow the registration — ensure no outstanding charges exist before the transfer date. Confirm via Transportstyrelsen.
5. Keep All Records
Retain the sale agreement (köpekontrakt) and Transportstyrelsen confirmation for at least two years. These protect you in case of any dispute about ownership or post-sale liability.
