Choosing the right payment method is critical in a private car sale. Never hand over the registration book (สมุดคู่มือฯ) or keys until you have confirmed receipt of full payment.
Bank Transfer — The Safest Method
- PromptPay: Thailand's instant payment system, linked to a Thai ID or phone number — instant, 24/7, and widely adopted. The standard for individual transactions. Daily limits vary by bank (typically ฿2 million per day for most verified accounts).
- Standard bank transfer: Same-day or next-business-day depending on the banks involved. Confirmed via your banking app.
- Confirmation first: Verify the credit in your mobile banking app before signing the transfer form at DLT.
Cash
- Still common: Cash transactions remain standard for private car sales in Thailand, especially for mid-range vehicles.
- Safety: For amounts above ฿100,000, arrange the exchange at a bank branch where staff can verify notes and you can deposit immediately.
- Counterfeit checking: Thai baht banknotes (especially ฿1,000) have watermarks, security threads, and colour-shifting ink. Banks provide free counterfeit checks.
What to Avoid
- Cheques: Personal cheques can be dishonoured. If you must accept a cheque, require a Cashier's Cheque (เช็คธนาคาร) from a reputable bank and verify with the bank before releasing the vehicle.
- International payment apps: PayPal and similar services are not appropriate for vehicle-sized transactions in Thailand.
- Instalment arrangements with private individuals: Without a formal legal agreement and collateral, there is no practical recourse if payments stop.
