Taiwan's banking and payment systems are reliable and well-suited to private car transactions. Choosing the right method based on sale value prevents fraud and provides a clear record.
Bank Transfer (匯款)
Bank transfer between Taiwan's major banks (Cathay United, CTBC, E.SUN, Hua Nan, etc.) is the recommended method for car sales. Transfers typically settle same-day. Verify the funds are credited to your account before completing the Motor Vehicles Office transfer.
LINE Pay and Other Mobile Payments
LINE Pay, JKoPay, and Apple Pay are widely used in Taiwan. These are convenient for deposits and smaller amounts but may have daily limits that make them unsuitable as the primary payment method for high-value vehicles.
Cashier's Cheque (支票)
For high-value transactions, a cashier's cheque from a bank is a secure option. Verify the cheque by calling the issuing bank directly before accepting — fraudulent bank cheques are a known scam.
Deposit
A deposit (訂金) of NT$5,000–20,000 once a price is agreed is common practice. It secures the buyer's commitment while full payment is arranged. Clarify refund terms upfront.
Scams to Avoid
- Fake transfer confirmations: Always check your actual bank account — not screenshots the buyer sends.
- Overpayment scam: Buyer sends more than agreed and asks for a refund. The original payment is fraudulent.
- Overseas buyer: No legitimate private buyer in Taiwan asks you to ship a vehicle internationally — this is always a scam.
