This 1964 Buick Skylark two door hardtop had swapped in a 500ci Cadillac V8 and was stripped of extraneous trim before painting it a very sleeper-ish Bernina Blue. The car had final detail work designed to make it an effortless, reliable and comfortable performer, and the car will snap your neck back and cruise effortlessly for several states at a time.

Starting in 2007 from a rust-free car, it had the mildly tuned 500 Caddy motor and an equally stout Turbo-Hydromatic 400 fitted with a 2,000 RPM stall torque converter. It looks great, the lack of factory trim allowing the car’s inherently clean lines to shine through unimpeded. Bernina Blue paint looks nicely applied, and all seals and weatherstripping was replaced at the time of respray.

Additional work included new body mounts, springs, bushings, and body-colored Wheelsmith steelies (15” x 6” front, two inches wider at the rear) with five fresh BFG tires. Inside, Dynamat insulation was applied to the floors and doors prior to fitment of a new, OEM style interior. The carburator was replaced, adjusted valve clearances, fully sorted the electrics, and fitted new windshield wipers.

Horn, gas gauge and speedometer now work as designed, mechanical oil pressure and water temp gauges are mounted beneath the dash, and a modern head unit is discreetly mounted in the glove box. Front buckets and the “ironing board” style center console were the options to have. The cabin matches the exterior’s elegant simplicity and neatly finished trunk.

Power is now sent through a 3.08, Posi-equipped differential for more relaxed cruising, and a custom-made oil pan tucks neatly up between the frame rails without compromising capacity. A new transmission crossmember allows pipes to be re-routed, and a fresh manifold-to-tailpipe system ends with chrome turn-downs just under the rear bumper.

Engine mods are limited to an HEI distributor with adjustable advance, MTS #10 cam, Edelbrock carb and MSD soft touch rev limiter, with temperature control aided by a new aluminum radiator and frame-mounted billet transmission cooler. Rear upper and lower control arms are boxed, and documentation is housed in a two inch thick, three ring binder.
