Payment Methods for Private Car Sales in Vietnam

Choosing the right payment method is critical in a private car sale. Never hand over the registration document (Giấy đăng ký xe) or keys until you have confirmed full payment receipt.

Bank Transfer — The Safest Method

  • Interbank transfer (chuyển khoản liên ngân hàng): Standard payment for vehicle transactions. Most Vietnamese banks support real-time interbank transfers (giao dịch 24/7).
  • Napas instant transfer: The national payment network enables near-instant transfers between Napas member banks.
  • Confirmation required: Verify the credited amount in your banking app before signing the notarised sale contract (Hợp đồng công chứng) or handing over documents.

VNPay / ZaloPay / MoMo — For Deposits Only

  • Daily limits: Mobile wallet apps (MoMo, ZaloPay, VNPay) have daily transaction limits that are typically well below the value of a car. Use these for a holding deposit only.
  • Bank-linked payment: VNPay linked directly to a bank account can process larger amounts — check the linked bank's limit.
  • Not recommended as primary method: For full vehicle payment, a direct bank transfer is safer and more reliable.

Cash

  • Common practice: Cash is still widely used for vehicle transactions in Vietnam.
  • Safety: For amounts above 200 million VND, arrange the exchange at a bank branch where the bank can verify the notes and you can deposit immediately.
  • Counterfeit risk: Vietnam dong banknotes have polymer security features (for ₫10,000 and above). Banks offer free counterfeit checks.

What to Avoid

  • Personal cheques: Not commonly used in Vietnam for private transactions — use bank transfers instead.
  • Deferred payment arrangements: Selling a car on credit to an individual without legal backing creates significant risk.
  • International platforms like PayPal: Not suitable for domestic vehicle transactions in Vietnam.
