Selling a car privately in South Africa requires specific documentation for the NaTIS (National Traffic Information System) transfer to be legal. Missing documents can delay or void the sale.
Essential Documents
- Original vehicle title deed (registration certificate): The primary ownership document. Must be endorsed and handed to the buyer.
- Roadworthy certificate: Required by law for all private sales in South Africa. Issued by a licensed testing station.
- Seller's South African ID: Both parties' SA IDs are required for the NaTIS transfer.
- Proof of address: Required for the NaTIS deregistration and re-registration process.
- Motor vehicle clearance certificate: Required to confirm the vehicle is not stolen. Obtained from the SAPS (South African Police Service) or an accredited testing station.
- Signed sale agreement: Records the sale price, condition disclosures, and both parties' details.
Finance Settlement
If the vehicle is under a finance agreement (e.g. Standard Bank, Absa, FNB Vehicle Finance), obtain a settlement letter and confirm the outstanding balance is cleared before transferring. The title deed cannot be released until finance is settled.
NaTIS Transfer
The buyer registers the vehicle in their name at a motor registering authority (MRA) — typically at a traffic department office. As seller, ensure you sign the back of the title deed and provide all required documents. Keep a copy of the sale agreement.
Cancel Insurance After Transfer
Do not cancel insurance until the transfer is complete and keys and documents have been handed over. Contact your insurer promptly after the sale to cancel and claim any pro-rated refund.
