Steep depreciation on new EVs — driven by Tesla price cuts and the rapid arrival of BYD and MG — means two- and three-year-old electric cars are often 30–45% off their original price, while the battery and drivetrain still have the vast majority of their working life ahead of them. But an EV is a different purchase to a petrol car: instead of worrying about engine compression and timing belts, you're assessing a high-voltage battery, charging compatibility and remaining warranty. This guide walks through exactly what to check before you buy.

Battery Health: The Number That Matters Most

On a used EV, the battery is the most expensive component and the one that degrades with age and use. The key metric is State of Health (SoH) — the battery's current usable capacity expressed as a percentage of its original capacity. A car that has lost capacity will have less range than it did when new, even if everything else is in perfect condition.

  • What good looks like: Most EV batteries retain around 85–90% of their original capacity after the first few years, and degradation slows over time. A 3-year-old car showing low-90s SoH is healthy; anything noticeably below the expected curve for its age and kilometres deserves a closer look.
  • How to read SoH: Some cars display a battery health figure in the service menu; others need a diagnostic tool (OBD-II reader with an EV app) or a dealer/independent EV specialist to pull it. Ask the seller for a recent battery health report, or arrange one as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
  • Watch for fast-charging history: A car charged predominantly on DC fast chargers and frequently run to 0% or held at 100% may degrade slightly faster than one charged gently at home. It's a factor, not a deal-breaker — SoH is the real evidence.

Real-World Range vs Claimed Range

Every EV is advertised with a WLTP range figure — a laboratory result measured under controlled conditions. Real-world range is always lower, and how much lower depends on how and where the car is driven. Judge a used EV on what it will actually do for your driving, not on the sticker number.

  • City driving: Urban stop-start traffic suits EVs well — regenerative braking recovers energy at every slowdown, so real-world city range often comes close to the claimed figure.
  • Highway driving: Sustained speeds (100–110 km/h) consume far more energy. Expect roughly 20–30% less than the WLTP figure on a long freeway run.
  • Air conditioning and heat: An Australian summer with the AC running can cut range by 10–25%. This is the single biggest real-world variable for most Australian drivers.
  • Match range to your routine: The average Australian commute is around 35 km a day. Even a used EV with a modest real-world range covers a typical week on a single charge — so don't overpay for range you'll rarely use.
  • Test it on the drive: Note the indicated range and consumption (kWh/100 km) during your test drive and compare it against the car's rated efficiency.

Charging: Can You Live With This Car?

Charging is where EV ownership succeeds or frustrates. Before you buy, work out how and where you will actually charge — this matters more than almost any spec on the listing.

  • Home charging feasibility: The cheapest, most convenient way to own an EV is to charge overnight at home. If you have a garage or driveway you can run a cable to, the case is strong. A dedicated 7.4 kW wallbox installed by a licensed electrician typically costs $1,000–$1,500 and adds around 40–50 km of range per hour. A standard 10A household socket works as a slow top-up (roughly 10–15 km per hour).
  • No off-street parking? Relying solely on public charging erases much of the running-cost advantage and adds friction. If you live in an apartment without a charger, weigh this carefully before buying.
  • Public and fast charging: Networks including Evie, Chargefox, NRMA, AmpCharge and Tesla Superchargers (now open to other brands with an adaptor) are expanding on highways and in cities. DC fast charging typically runs $0.45–$0.75/kWh — convenient for trips, more expensive per km than charging at home.
  • Connector and plug types: Australia standardised on Type 2 for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Almost all current mainstream EVs (Tesla, BYD, Hyundai, Kia, MG, Polestar) use these. Some older cars (e.g. early Nissan Leaf) use CHAdeMO for DC — still usable, but confirm the connector and check fast-charger availability for that standard near you.

Confirm the original in-service date and current odometer to work out exactly how much cover is left, and check whether it transfers to a second owner — most do.
  • Vehicle vs battery warranty: The general vehicle warranty (often 5 years) and the battery warranty usually run on separate clocks. Check both.
  • Service history: EVs need far less servicing than petrol cars, but they still need it — brake fluid, cabin filters, tyre rotations, coolant for the battery thermal system and software updates. A complete service record shows the car has been maintained and keeps the warranty valid.
  • Software and updates: Modern EVs receive over-the-air or workshop software updates that can affect range, charging behaviour and features. Check the car is on current software and, for connected cars, that any previous owner accounts have been removed and the car can be transferred to your account.
Always run a PPSR check before you buy

A $2 Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) check at ppsr.gov.au confirms the car is free of outstanding finance, has not been written off, and is not reported stolen. If there is finance owing, the lender can repossess the car even after you have paid the seller. Never hand over money until the PPSR is clear.

Running Costs vs Petrol

The day-to-day economics are a big part of why used EVs are appealing. With petrol around $1.90–$2.20 per litre, the fuel-cost gap is substantial — and the savings start from the day you buy.

  • Charging cost: Home charging at typical residential rates ($0.30–$0.35/kWh) costs roughly $10–$12 per 100 km, versus $15–$18 for a petrol car using around 8 L/100 km. Charging from rooftop solar or on an overnight EV tariff is dramatically cheaper again.
  • Servicing: With no oil changes, spark plugs, timing belt or exhaust, EV servicing typically runs 30–50% lower than a comparable petrol car. Regenerative braking also extends brake-pad life significantly.
  • What to budget for: Tyres (heavier EVs can wear them faster), a 12V battery every few years, and standard registration and insurance — EV insurance can run a little higher due to specialist repair costs, so compare quotes.

Incentives and Rebates

Government support for EVs in Australia comes mostly through tax and registration concessions rather than cash rebates, and the picture changes regularly. Most state cash-rebate schemes have wound down, but some concessions remain. Treat the points below as general guidance and always confirm current eligibility with the official source before you rely on it.

  • Federal FBT exemption: Eligible EVs under the luxury-car-tax fuel-efficient threshold can be exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax when packaged through a novated lease. This mainly benefits salary-packaging employees and applies to specific arrangements — check the ATO and your lease provider.
