At this price you’re mostly looking at cars that are 10 to 15 years old or more, with higher mileage. Compact models from mainstream brands tend to hold the most value for money, since parts are easier and cheaper to find. Condition and service history matter far more than age or badge at this end of the market.

Check the last ITV (roadworthiness inspection) report: repeated faults on the same item (brakes, suspension, corrosion) signal costs to come. Ask for the service history, and if in doubt, get the car checked by an independent garage before you buy.

Insurance, the annual road tax and a valid ITV are the main ones. On an older car, it’s also worth setting aside a margin for maintenance and wear parts.
