Indian buyers have increasingly easy access to vehicle history data. Knowing what they'll find — and disclosing everything proactively — builds trust and prevents deals collapsing at the due diligence stage.
What Buyers Check
- Vahan portal (vahan.parivahan.gov.in): The official government portal — shows RC details, registration date, owner count, fuel type, insurance validity, and whether any challan (traffic fines) are outstanding.
- Hypothecation status: RC clearly shows whether a loan is active (hypothecated to a lender). Buyers will not proceed with a vehicle that has an active hypothecation.
- CarDekho / Cars24 reports: These platforms offer paid vehicle history reports aggregating data from multiple sources including accident and insurance claim information.
- Odometer and mileage plausibility: Buyers cross-check mileage against service records and age — unusually low readings for a given registration year raise red flags.
Disclosing Accident History
India has no centralised accident database, but experienced buyers, mechanics, and inspection services can identify repair work from panel alignment, paint depth, and welding points. Disclose all accident history and major repairs in your listing — it prevents deals collapsing at the inspection stage.
Clear Outstanding Challans
Buyers check Vahan for outstanding traffic fines (challans) associated with the vehicle's registration number. Pay all outstanding challans before listing — they transfer with ownership and are a deal-breaker for informed buyers.
Run These Checks Yourself First
Check your vehicle on the Vahan portal before listing. Verify your RC is up to date, insurance is valid, and no challans are outstanding. Being able to share this information proactively builds immediate buyer confidence.
