Selling a car in South Korea requires completing a formal ownership transfer at a local District Motor Vehicle Office (자동차 등록사업소). The process is standardised and can be completed in a single visit with the right documents.
Essential Documents
- Vehicle Registration Card (자동차 등록증): The primary ownership document. The original must be surrendered at the DMV for the transfer.
- Seller's ID card (주민등록증) or passport: Required to confirm seller's identity at the DMV.
- Vehicle transfer application form (이전등록 신청서): Available at the DMV. Both parties or their authorised representatives must complete this.
- Certificate of automobile insurance: Valid comprehensive or third-party insurance is required.
- Vehicle safety inspection certificate (자동차 검사증명서): Must be current.
- Signed sale and purchase agreement: Records price and condition — recommended even if not strictly required.
Finance Settlement
If the vehicle is under a loan or installment plan (할부), obtain a settlement certificate and lien release from the lender before selling. The transfer cannot be completed with an outstanding lien on the registration.
DMV Transfer Process
The buyer typically handles the transfer application at their local DMV, but both parties' documents are required. As seller, ensure you provide signed originals and retain copies. The transfer fee is paid by the buyer by convention.
Cancel Insurance After Transfer
Contact your insurer to cancel or transfer the policy once the DMV transfer is confirmed. Request a pro-rata refund for unused premium.
