What documents do I need to sell my car in Malaysia?

Selling a car in Malaysia involves a formal transfer of ownership through JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan). Having the right documents ready — and understanding the puspakom inspection requirement — makes the process smooth and protects both parties.

Grant (Geran) — the ownership document

The Grant (Geran) is the official vehicle ownership document in Malaysia. It's the equivalent of a title deed for the vehicle and is issued by JPJ.

  • Original Grant required: The original Grant must be handed to the buyer. Without it, JPJ will not process the ownership transfer.
  • Lost Grant: If you've lost the Grant, apply for a replacement at your nearest JPJ branch. This takes time, so sort it out before listing.
  • Company-owned vehicles: If the car is registered under a company, additional documentation (board resolution, company stamp) is required for the sale.

Puspakom inspection (B2 or B5)

A Puspakom inspection is required before a private car sale in Malaysia for vehicles over 15 years old or those involved in an accident. However, many buyers request one for any used car as a condition of purchase.

  • B2 inspection: Standard inspection for private ownership transfer — checks vehicle identification numbers, body condition and basic safety.
  • B5 inspection: More comprehensive — includes engine and chassis checks. Required in certain circumstances.
  • Practical tip: Getting a Puspakom inspection done before listing shows transparency and removes a major objection buyers raise.

Roadtax and insurance

  • Valid roadtax: Malaysian roadtax (cukai jalan) must be valid to legally drive the vehicle. An expired roadtax is a negotiating point buyers will use to lower the price.
  • Motor insurance: The vehicle must have valid motor insurance. Notify your insurer when you sell — you may be entitled to a refund of the unexpired premium.

JPJ transfer process

  • Both parties at JPJ: Both seller and buyer (or their representatives with power of attorney) must appear at a JPJ branch to complete the transfer.
  • Documents required: Original Grant, seller's IC (MyKad), buyer's IC, valid roadtax, Puspakom report (if applicable), Sales & Purchase Agreement.
  • Transfer fee: JPJ charges a transfer fee based on the vehicle's value.
