Documents Needed to Sell a Car in New Zealand: Complete Checklist

Selling a car privately in New Zealand is legally straightforward, but a few key documents and checks make the difference between a smooth transaction and a messy dispute.

Essential Documents

  • Vehicle Registration Document: The current registration certificate confirming you are the registered owner. Check the expiry date — if registration has lapsed, renew via the NZTA (Waka Kotahi) before selling.
  • WOF (Warrant of Fitness): A current WOF is not legally required for a private sale, but buyers expect it. Without a current WOF, buyers will negotiate significantly lower. Don't let it lapse before listing.
  • Service History: The car's full service record, especially for newer vehicles. Significant value booster.
  • Driver's Licence or Photo ID: You'll need to verify your identity for the NZTA online transfer.

Run a PPSR Check Before You Sell

The PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) records whether any finance is secured against your vehicle. Buyers almost always run this check. Get your own PPSR report (ppsr.govt.nz, NZD 3) before listing — if there is a finance encumbrance, arrange to clear it at settlement.

Completing the NZTA Transfer

Ownership transfer is done online via the NZTA (myNZTA) portal. Both the seller and buyer need a RealMe or myNZTA login. The seller transfers the vehicle out of their name, and the buyer registers it into theirs. As the seller, transfer the vehicle out of your name immediately after payment clears — until you do, any fines incurred by the buyer remain linked to you.

Note on Plates in New Zealand

In New Zealand, registration plates stay with the vehicle (not the seller) when ownership transfers. If you have personalised plates, contact NZTA to remove them before selling.
