We multiply your daily distance (km) by the EV's energy use (kWh/100km), then multiply by your electricity rate (R/kWh). Eskom's Homelight tariff is around R2.80–R3.20/kWh for residential consumers, though municipal resellers such as City of Cape Town and City Power charge more. Charging from rooftop solar can reduce costs significantly.

State of Health is the percentage of original battery capacity still available. A new EV is 100% SoH; after several years it may fall to 85–90%. Below 75–80% you will notice a meaningful loss of range. South Africa's warm climate is generally benign for battery longevity, but charging to 100% regularly and exposure to extreme heat can accelerate degradation.

A 7 kW home wall box adds roughly 40–50 km of range per hour. A DC fast charger (50–175 kW) at Rubicon, Tritium or ChargeAfrica stations can bring a depleted pack to 80% in 20–45 minutes. Given load-shedding, many South African EV owners pair their wall box with a solar inverter or home battery system for reliable overnight charging.
