At this price, you’re generally looking at cars that are 10 to 15 years old or more, with higher mileage. Compact models from established brands tend to hold their resale value best. Condition and service history matter far more than age or brand at this end of the market.

Check the TÜV/HU report (Germany’s mandatory roadworthiness test) for repeated faults on the same item — brakes, suspension, corrosion — these signal costs to come. Ask for the service booklet, and if in doubt, get the car checked by an independent garage before you buy.

Insurance, vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer) and a fresh TÜV/HU are the main ones. On an older car, it’s also worth setting aside a margin for maintenance and wear parts.
