NZ buyers have access to excellent free and low-cost vehicle history tools. Knowing what they'll find — and disclosing it proactively — is the most effective way to build trust and protect your asking price.
What Buyers Check
- Carjam (carjam.co.nz): Pulls from the NZTA database. Shows registration history, WOF dates, odometer readings recorded at WOF, number of previous owners, and whether the car was ever imported.
- PPSR (ppsr.govt.nz): Reveals whether any finance is secured against the vehicle. A clean PPSR is essential — buyers will not proceed if finance is registered.
- WOF history via Carjam: Odometer readings from every WOF are visible. Any significant mileage discrepancy between checks raises immediate suspicion.
- Import history: New Zealand has many Japanese imports. Buyers who prefer NZ-new vehicles will specifically check this.
Disclosing Accident History
NZ has no centralised accident database, but body panel alignment, paint depth, and workshop records will reveal repairs to any experienced buyer. Disclose all accident history and major repairs in your listing — it prevents deals collapsing at viewing.
Run These Checks Yourself First
Run a Carjam report and a PPSR check on your own car before listing. This lets you address any issues proactively and share the reports with buyers to build immediate confidence.
