Once the transfer is done and you have received payment, there are several important steps to complete. Skipping them can leave you legally exposed or facing unnecessary costs well after you thought the sale was finished.
1. Confirm the transfer is complete
Check the RTA app (Dubai) or the Abu Dhabi Traffic Management portal to confirm the vehicle is no longer registered in your name. The transfer is complete when the new owner's details appear in the system — this usually happens on the same day as the visit to the transfer centre. Do not assume it is done until you have verified it yourself.
2. Cancel or transfer your insurance
Contact your insurer as soon as the transfer is confirmed. You have two options: cancel the policy and receive a pro-rata refund for the unused months remaining, or transfer the policy to your new vehicle. Do not leave an active policy running on a car you no longer own. While you would not be liable for accidents after the official transfer date, an active policy in your name on a car you have sold can create administrative complications.
3. Deregister your Salik tag (Dubai)
The Salik tag is linked to your RTA account, not to the vehicle. Log in to the RTA app or Salik website, detach the tag from your account, and either transfer it to your new car or request a refund of the remaining balance. If you leave the tag linked to your account after selling the car, any toll charges incurred by the new owner will continue to be deducted from your balance.
4. Settle any outstanding traffic fines
Run a final check on the RTA app and Dubai Police app after the sale. Any fines issued after the official transfer date are the buyer's responsibility. Pre-transfer fines remain yours — settle them promptly. If you are unsure of the exact transfer date and time, the RTA app shows the transaction timestamp.
5. Keep copies of all documents for at least two years
Retain copies of the sale agreement, the transfer receipt from the RTA or DMT, and any payment confirmations for a minimum of two years. If any dispute arises about the vehicle's condition at the time of sale, the transfer date, or whether a particular fine was raised before or after the sale, these documents protect you. Store digital copies in addition to any physical paperwork.
