Once payment is confirmed and the notary transfer is complete, take these steps to close the sale and protect yourself from ongoing liability.
1. Confirm the Notary Transfer Is Complete
The notarised transfer is the legal completion of the sale in Bolivia. Retain your copy of the notarised transfer document as proof. Ensure the buyer registers the vehicle with RUAT in their name — until this happens, the vehicle may still be associated with your name in the RUAT system.
2. Cancel Your Insurance
Contact your SOAT insurer to cancel the compulsory insurance after the transfer is complete. Request any applicable refund for unused premium.
3. Cancel Any Optional Insurance
Cancel any additional vehicle insurance policies and request pro-rata refunds.
4. Follow Up on RUAT Registration
Follow up with the buyer to confirm they have re-registered the vehicle in their name with RUAT. Until this is done, you may continue to receive tax notices. Retain all sale documentation to dispute any such notices.
5. Keep All Records
Retain the notarised transfer document, sale agreement, and payment confirmation for at least two years. These protect you in the event of any dispute about ownership or post-sale liability.
