What to Do After Selling Your Car in Taiwan: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps promptly to close the sale cleanly and avoid any ongoing liability.

1. Complete the Motor Vehicles Office Transfer

Both parties must attend the Motor Vehicles Office (監理站) to complete the ownership transfer. Bring all required documents. The transfer should ideally be completed on the same day payment is received. Until the transfer is filed, you may retain liability for any fines or incidents associated with the vehicle.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel the compulsory automobile liability insurance (強制汽車責任保險) and any optional cover. Request a refund for the unused premium portion.

3. Cancel Road Tax (If Applicable)

If you have prepaid road tax (車牌燃料費) beyond the sale date, apply for a refund at the Motor Vehicles Office or online. Calculate the refund for unexpired months.

4. Cancel ETC Account

If your vehicle has an ETC transponder for highway tolls, contact your ETC service provider to cancel or transfer the account and claim any remaining balance.

5. Keep All Records

Retain the sale agreement and Motor Vehicles Office transfer confirmation for at least two years. This protects you in case of any dispute about ownership or liability after the sale.
