What to Do After Selling Your Car in Denmark: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps promptly to protect yourself from ongoing liability and close the sale cleanly.

1. Complete the Motorregistret Transfer

Complete the ownership transfer via Motorregistret (motorregister.dk) using MitID before or simultaneously with payment and handover. Until the transfer is confirmed, you retain liability for any fines or incidents associated with the vehicle. The process takes minutes.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel the liability insurance (ansvarsforsikring) and any optional cover after the Motorregistret transfer is confirmed. Request a pro-rata refund for unused premium.

3. Cancel Road Tax (Vægtafgift) If Applicable

After the ownership transfer, road tax responsibility shifts to the new owner. Contact Motorstyrelsen if you have prepaid beyond the sale date to arrange any applicable refund.

4. Hand Over All Documentation

Hand over both parts of the registration certificate, any service records, spare keys, and the sale agreement copy to the buyer.

5. Keep All Records

Retain the sale agreement and Motorregistret transfer confirmation for at least two years. These protect you in case of any dispute about ownership or post-sale liability.
