What to Do After Selling Your Car in Norway: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps promptly to protect yourself from ongoing liability.

1. Complete the Statens vegvesen Transfer

Complete the ownership transfer via vegvesen.no using BankID before or simultaneously with payment and handover. Until the transfer is confirmed, you retain liability for any fines or incidents associated with the vehicle. The process takes minutes.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel the policy after the Statens vegvesen transfer is confirmed. Request a pro-rata refund for unused premium.

3. Confirm Annual Tax Is Up to Date

Norwegian vehicle annual tax (årsavgift / trafikkforsikringsavgift) shifts to the new owner upon transfer. Verify there are no outstanding charges before the handover.

4. Hand Over All Documentation

Hand over the vognkort, service records, spare keys, and a copy of the signed sale agreement.

5. Keep All Records

Retain the kjøpskontrakt and Statens vegvesen transfer confirmation for at least two years.
