What to Do After Selling Your Car in New Zealand: Post-Sale Checklist

Once payment is confirmed, complete these steps promptly to close out the sale cleanly and avoid ongoing liability.

1. Complete the NZTA Transfer Immediately

Transfer the vehicle out of your name via the myNZTA portal as soon as payment clears. Until you do, any infringements (parking fines, red light camera tickets) issued to that vehicle may come back to you. The process takes minutes online.

2. Cancel Your Insurance

Contact your insurer to cancel comprehensive cover and request a refund for unused months. Your third-party liability under ACC ends when the registration transfers.

3. Cancel Road User Charges (Diesel and EV Vehicles)

If the car runs on diesel or is a plug-in EV, Road User Charges (RUC) may be involved. Ensure any RUC purchased is either transferred to the buyer or that the buyer is informed of the remaining balance.

4. Remove Personalised Plates (If Applicable)

If you have personalised number plates, contact NZTA to remove them before the transfer. Standard plates remain with the vehicle in New Zealand.

5. Keep All Records

Retain the sale agreement and NZTA transfer confirmation for at least two years in case any dispute arises about ownership or the condition at time of sale.
