Once payment is confirmed and the sale agreement is signed, complete these steps to close the sale cleanly and avoid ongoing insurance and administrative liability.
1. Notify the Starosty Within 30 Days
Polish law requires the seller to notify the district office (starosty) within 30 days of the sale. This can be done online via the obywatel.gov.pl portal or in person. Failure to notify means you remain listed as the registered owner and may receive fines or tax notices.
2. Cancel Your OC Insurance
Contact your insurer to cancel the third-party liability insurance (OC — Obowiązkowe ubezpieczenie komunikacyjne). Important: OC insurance in Poland is tied to the vehicle, not the owner — the new owner is legally required to take out their own OC. Cancel yours promptly to stop premium accruing and request a refund for unused months.
3. Cancel Optional Insurance (AC/NNW)
Cancel any comprehensive (AC) or personal accident (NNW) insurance after the sale. Request a pro-rata refund for unused premium.
4. Cancel Any Autoviaggi or Toll Transponders
If your vehicle had a toll transponder (e.g. ViaToll for A-roads), contact the provider to close the account.
5. Keep All Records for Two Years
Retain the sale agreement (umowa kupna-sprzedaży), starosty notification confirmation, and payment proof for at least two years.
