What to Do After Selling Your Car in Thailand

After receiving full payment, both buyer and seller must attend a DLT office to complete the ownership transfer. Until this is done, the vehicle remains in your name.

Step 1: DLT Ownership Transfer

  • In-person requirement: Both seller and buyer must appear in person at the DLT (Department of Land Transport) provincial office. The DLT officer updates the registration book (สมุดคู่มือฯ) to the new owner's name.
  • Documents: Original registration book, seller's and buyer's Thai ID cards.
  • Timeline: The transfer is typically completed on the same day at the DLT office.

Step 2: Insurance Cancellation

  • Cancel your voluntary motor insurance on the day of sale — you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
  • You may be entitled to a pro-rata refund of unused premium.
  • Compulsory insurance (พ.ร.บ.) is tied to the vehicle and transfers with it.

Step 3: Annual Tax

  • Once the DLT transfer is complete, the annual road tax (ต่อภาษี) responsibility transfers to the new owner.
  • Unused annual tax paid by the seller does not transfer or receive a refund — factor this into price negotiations if significant.

Step 4: Retain Documentation

  • Keep a copy of the DLT transfer receipt and payment confirmation for at least 3 years.
  • The transfer receipt confirms the date of ownership change — your legal protection.
