What to Do After Selling Your Car in Indonesia

After receiving full payment and handing over the BPKB and STNK, the buyer must complete the balik nama (name change) at Samsat. Until this is done, the vehicle remains registered in your name.

Step 1: Sign the Kwitansi

  • Kwitansi: The sale receipt (kwitansi) signed by both parties is the primary transaction record for Indonesian private car sales.
  • Contents: Vehicle details (plate number, NOKA, NOSIN), agreed price, names of both parties, and the date.
  • Two copies: Each party keeps a signed copy.

Step 2: Hand Over BPKB and STNK

  • Hand over the original BPKB and STNK after confirming payment and signing the kwitansi.
  • The buyer needs these documents to complete the balik nama (name change) at Samsat.
  • The buyer has until the STNK renewal cycle to complete the balik nama, but the sooner it is done, the sooner the vehicle is out of your name.

Step 3: Insurance Cancellation

  • Cancel your voluntary motor insurance — you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
  • You may be entitled to a pro-rata refund for unused premium.
  • Annual vehicle tax (PKB) responsibility transfers to the buyer after the balik nama — but inform Samsat proactively if you have concerns.

Step 4: Retain Documentation

  • Keep a copy of the signed kwitansi and payment confirmation for at least 3 years.
  • If the buyer is slow to complete balik nama, the kwitansi with a clear date is your legal record of the sale.
